The 20th World Youth Scrabble Championship Heads to Malaysia

The countdown is on for the 20th edition of the World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC), set to take place from 30 August to 1 September 2025 in Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Organized at the Sri Kuala Lumpur International School (Primary), the WYSC will once again bring together the brightest young Scrabble talents from across the globe.
A Global Gathering of Youth Talent
Since its inception in 2006, the WYSC has been the pinnacle event for young Scrabble players, offering a platform for rising stars to showcase their skills on the international stage. The 2025 edition promises to be one of the biggest yet, with around 300 players expected to compete, representing countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

Tournament Format
Competitors will battle it out over 24 games across three days, each match testing their vocabulary depth, board vision, and tactical prowess. At the end of the tournament, the Top 10 overall finishers (born on or after 1 January 2008) will be recognized, alongside category awards in Under 16, Under 14, Under 12, Under 10, and Under 8 divisions.

Beyond the Trophies
In addition to the main standings, the WYSC will feature special awards for Top Female Player, Top Team, High Word, High Game, and a variety of novelty prizes — ensuring that excellence and creativity are celebrated in equal measure.

Country Representation and Quotas

Each participating nation has been allocated a quota of free-entry slots, with heavyweights like Malaysia, Singapore, Pakistan, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Kenya expected to send strong contingents. As the host nation, Malaysia has been granted an extra 20 places, further boosting local representation at this landmark edition.

Why WYSC 2025 Matters

This 20th anniversary edition is not just another tournament, it is a celebration of youth development in Scrabble and a reminder of how far the game has come globally. The WYSC has historically been a launchpad for future champions, and 2025 will undoubtedly produce another generation of names to watch.
