Gov. Douye Diri National Scrabble Classic 6.0: Nigeria's Best Set for ₦20 Million Battle in Yenagoa

The stage is set for another thrilling edition of the Gov. Douye Diri National Scrabble Classic 6.0, as more than 300 elite Scrabble players from Nigeria and across West Africa converge on Yenagoa for what has become the biggest event on the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) calendar. 


Scheduled for August 1–2, 2026, the World English Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) and Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA)-sanctioned championship boasts a record ₦20 million prize fund, making it the richest edition in the tournament's history.


This year's championship will be played across two venues. Round one action begins at Matho Crystal Hotel, Imiringi Road, Yenagoa, while the concluding rounds and prize presentation will take place at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa.


A major highlight is the Master's Division, where the champion will pocket a ₦2 million star prize, an increase from last year's ₦1 million. The enhanced prize structure reflects Governor Douye Diri's continued commitment to developing Scrabble and other sports in Bayelsa State.


Chairman of the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association, Daniel Alabrah, said the governor's unwavering support has transformed the championship into one of Africa's premier Scrabble events, attracting the continent's strongest competitors year after year.


Nigeria Scrabble Federation President Bright Idahosa also praised Governor Douye Diri's consistent investment in the game, describing the championship as the tournament every top Nigerian player looks forward to each season.


With valuable WESPA rating points, national prestige, and one of the biggest prize purses on the African Scrabble circuit at stake, fans can expect two days of intense tactical battles and world-class wordplay.
