WESPA Appoints Yong Jian Rong as New Ratings Officer

The World English-language Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) has announced the appointment of Yong Jian Rong (Singapore) as its new Ratings Officer, a strategic move aimed at strengthening the global scrabble rating framework. Effective 1 January 2026.

Yong Jian Rong is a Scrabble Expert from Singapore and will oversee the administration and continuous improvement of the WESPA Rating System, which serves as the international benchmark for competitive Scrabble rankings. Yong's mandate includes stimulating global competitiveness, promoting wider adoption of the system, and ensuring consistency and transparency in ratings management.

According to Chris Lipe the WESPA Secretary

"His strong technical insight, combined with a deep understanding of both competitive play and rating methodologies, positions him well to take on this important role.

In his capacity as Ratings Officer, Yong is expected to introduce fresh ideas and innovations that will further strengthen the integrity, accuracy, and sustainability of WESPA’s Over-the-Board (OTB) and Online Rating Systems.

WESPA would also like to take this opportunity to express its sincere gratitude to Jason Broersma, the outgoing WESPA Ratings Officer, whose dedication and consistency over many years ensured the effective management of the WESPA rating system and calendar.

Jason’s contributions have played a significant role in maintaining the credibility and reliability of WESPA’s ratings infrastructure.

WESPA is confident that Yong Jian Rong’s appointment represents a step in the right direction and aligns closely with the Association’s renewed vision of modernising the rating system and its application processes to better serve players, organisers, and member associations worldwide."
